When and how is the SPEDN app being shut down?

After almost seven years, we are sunsetting the SPEDN app on March 31, 2026.

Updated yesterday

Originally introduced as a proof-of-concept app to demonstrate how easy it is to spend digital assets with Flexa, SPEDN has finally served its purpose—and it’s time to say good-bye.

We are shutting down the SPEDN app on March 31, 2026.

Many, many people have used SPEDN over the years to make instant crypto payments at real-world stores and restaurants using Bitcoin, Litecoin, Zcash, and more. Today, as we continue to focus our efforts on supporting more and more merchant and payment service provider integrations via Flexa Payments and the Flexa SDK, we have decided that supporting and maintaining the SPEDN app and its custodial backend is not the best way to spend our team's time and energy.

What does this mean for you?

  • You may continue using SPEDN as you normally would until March 31, 2026.

  • On March 31, the SPEDN app will stop working, and will no longer support deposits or payments.

  • If you have any funds remaining in your SPEDN wallets after March 31, they will automatically transfer to your Flexa balance so that you can withdraw them to another wallet.

  • Alternatively, you can request to have your funds transferred from SPEDN immediately by visiting your Flexa balance and requesting a full withdrawal now (please note that verification may be required).

What if you don’t spend or withdraw your assets before March 31?

Any assets that you’ve previously deposited to the SPEDN app and not spent are your property, and will remain your property even after SPEDN is shut down.

If you don’t spend your balance to zero or request a full withdrawal before March 31, 2026, your remaining assets will simply transfer to your Flexa balance, which you can always access at activity.flexa.co. From there, any migrated SPEDN balances will be available for you to transfer to another wallet.

Keep in mind, however, that many states and jurisdictions have unclaimed property laws that require Flexa to remit your assets to local government after a dormancy period of between two and five years, so that you can more easily recover them. As such, we strongly encourage you to withdraw your assets from Flexa prior to the applicable account dormancy period for your state or jurisdiction so that we can help ensure their efficient return.

What will happen to the SPEDN app after March 31?

On March 31, the SPEDN app will be removed from the App Store and Play Store. Although you can continue to leave the app installed on your device, it will no longer function as a digital asset wallet, nor will it offer any payment or deposit functionality.

What about the SPEDN pool on Flexa Capacity?

Because the SPEDN app will stop supporting payments on March 31, the SPEDN pool on Flexa Capacity will also stop earning rewards at that time. Any collateral provided to the SPEDN pool will need to be transferred to another pool or withdrawn from Flexa Capacity altogether.
